Last week, the Most Reverend Jaime Soto, Bishop of the Diocese of Sacramento, installed 19 candidates into the ministries of lector and acolyte in a special Mass on November 4, 2020. Due to strict COVID-19 safety protocols, the ceremony was restricted only to St. Patrick's staff, faculty, and seminarians. In order to allow the greater St. Patrick's community to participate the ceremony was livestreamed to the St. Patrick's Facebook page. You can see the recording on our Facebook page.
This is an exciting step for our seminarians for their increased participation in the Liturgy. The lector is instituted to proclaim the readings from Sacred Scripture, with the exception of the Gospel. He may also announce the intentions for the Universal Prayer and recite the Psalm between the readings. Acolytes will light candles and carry them in procession and during the Gospel, prepare the wine and water for the sacrifice of the Mass, and participate in distributing Holy Communion.
Seminarians who are the new lectors are Leandro Calingasan, Emmanuel Gutierrez, and Dereck Delgado of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, Alvaro Santamaria of the Diocese of Oakland, Larry Denis of the Diocese of Honolulu, Benjamin Condon of the Diocese of Sacramento, Mauricio Rodriguez of the Diocese of Santa Rosa, and Akbar Saul Walle Perez of the Diocese of Stockton.
The new acolytes are David Mees of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, Chi-Nhan Vo of the Archdiocese of Portland, Juan Carlos Ponce, Garrett McGowan, and John Paul Rabago of the Diocese of Oakland, Joseph Klinge and Lloyd Rebuldela of the Diocese of Fresno, Kurt Meyer and Hai (Francis) Pham of the Diocese of Honolulu, Christopher Girolo of the Diocese of Santa Rosa, and Nicolas Castoldi of the Diocese of Spokane.
